A SOLUTE TO WTARS
December 29th, 2009 by hamslife
West Tennessee Amateur Radio Society (WTARS) steps forward to promote amateur radio and is to be commended for humanitarian efforts.
It all started when Bob Alper, W6KT, went to visit his friend and fellow ham Gary King, W4WKZ, in November 2008. It was then that Bob discovered
Along with his other amateur related activities, before his antennas were damaged, Gary daily reported weather conditions in Medon, TN, Gary’s home town, to the National Weather Service in Memphis, TN but after his antenna system was damaged he was unable to operate his station and thus not able to send in his daily weather report.
Bob related
Finally after over a year of silence W4WKZ was back on the air on December fifth of 2009.
WTARS is not unlike other clubs. It does not have a large pot of money waiting to be used for such projects but it does have member who are willing to give of their time and personal finances to help a fellow ham in need.
Thank you WTARS members for being an excellent example to us all.

I was touched by your article and was reminded of a gentleman I had met on one of the local repeaters some time ago.
Although he was blind, I always found him to be in good spirits and a pleasure to chat with during the morning drive time.
From time to time I’d hear that guys from the local radio club / repeater group would help him set up his radios and other ham gear. Its always special when people reach out to help others in need.
Greg was not only a gentleman but also a bit of a special radio personality with a unique gift of gab.
Since no one has heard from him over the past few years, I’d suspect he may now be a silent key. Although he may be SK he is not forgotten.

Very useful article. Myself & my neighbor were preparing to do some research about that. We got a good book on that matter from our local library and most books were not as descriptive as your information. I am very glad to see such information which I was searching for a long time.
